-There is nothing you can do for the processor.
-I think 512MB RAM is maxed
-a replacement optical drive may be difficult. I looked at www.macsales.com and it seems like available replacement drives may not work on 400MHz Powerbooks unless they came with burning capability. This would make me wary.
-I think OS10.4.11 would be the highest OSX possible. It's very expensive and only available from 3rd parties, like megamacs.com.
About the only things going for older units like this IMO are the ability to boot in OS9 and a built-in modem. Personally I would evaluate what work you need to get done, and purchase accordingly.

If there is a way to make Adobe Flash Player work on the Powerbook G4 OS 10.5.8 Leopard, please let me know. (I am certain I am not the only one searching for help on this topic.) As an aside, the topic list below is too generic. There should be one 'using OS 10.5 Leopard on a laptop' or 'Powerbook'. I have Otto Matic™ and Deimons Rising which are great PPC games (works on OS 9 too) that came with an iBook, I could send you a copy of each. Other great games for PPC are Mars Explorer, Bitfighter, and Minecraft if you can get it to work. All these games work on Leopard.
