Hexen 2 Pak Files

Here you can find a collection of levels and hubs to download for Hexen II. Single maps can generally go under the data1maps subdirectory of your Hexen II install, while larger level packs might go under their own subgame directory. (Hint: if you are using a *NIX port of Hexen II and find some of the maps or other files won't load, it may be due to filenames that have capital letters in them. Change the filenames to lowercase letters and it should work.)

Some of these maps, particularly the deathmatch ones, were excavated from old crusty file archives that didn't always preserve README files or authorship information. Sorry if that's the case for one of yours but this site is no longer maintained.

  1. Download this file:-Download here jakub-majewski.com After downloading the file, run it. Ensure the folder path is the same as your Hexen 2 Steam folder. By default it should be either C: Program Files (x86) Steam steamapps common Hexen 2 or D: SteamLibrary SteamApps common Hexen 2, except that the drive letter can be different.
  2. Hexen II and HexenWorld. Hexen II was released in 1997 by Raven Software as the follow-up to Heretic. Using a modified Quake 1 engine, Hexen II included the familiar hub-style travel, inventory slots, destructible environments, 4 playable characters each with their own unique stats, and a RPG-influenced level up system.

If you want, you can jump directly to a subsection:

Mission Pack by RinoRinoA set of 22 small, mostly medieval maps by Rino. The maps are generally arranged in a linear fashion with only a few hub-style exits. In-game messages are in Italian. This set is a little rough around the edges in some places, but overall a fun adventure.

Mission Pack by Rino 2RinoA second adventure by Rino, with 12 high quality maps in a linear progression. Primarily Blackmarsh themes are used, with a nice blend of Septimus elements in some areas to create a feel that's more evocative of the Renaissance than ancient Rome. Portal of Praevus is required to play (although PoP creatures/textures are not present.)Portal of Praevus

The Baron Gastone HouseRinoA smaller, three-map hub set from Rino, this one set in a manor and crypts with some custom textures. Unlock the secret of good Baron Gastone's magic piano and battle the Horseman of the Apocalypse that he sealed away before his death. This is another good set from Rino, shorter than the Mission Pack by Rino sets but still recommended! A source port is required, but the set isn't specific to any particular one (I used Hammer of Thyrion).Source PortDownload

The Dark Mysteries of Dr. BonesRinoRino's dedication to Hexen II comes through once again with another short & sweet hub. This time you are exploring the house of Dr. Bones and the adjoining catacombs. There are lots of custom textures, good thematic use of the game's bestiary and some nice scripted events and traps. There's also some nice design such as little windows to peek through and see where puzzle items can be found later. There's just a little touch of comedy sprinkled in, too. Some of the English in the messages is a little bit odd but nothing too jarring or incomprehensible. Overall another recommended set.Source Port

Wheel Of Karma: A Tulku Odyssey (Part 1)InkyA set of several maps that use Portal of Praevus both for the Tulku setting and the extended creatures and functions, a welcome rarity in Hexen II mods. Snowy mountains, ice, lavish temples and some grand, peculiar machinery await discovery, as do some modified creatures and artifacts to change things up. The maps are varied, clever and creative, packed with secrets, puzzles and lore. There's even a conversation system, although currently you have to find a secret area to see this in action. Despite the new additions, the general spirit of Hexen II is kept intact.
This is meant to be just the first demo episode of a bigger adventure and I'm quite looking forward to seeing what Inky comes up with next.

Shifting SandswhirledtsarA lavish Thysis/Egyptian map that takes a more Quake-like bent with a bunch of grand setpiece rooms and heavy combat interspersed with a few more Hexen-ish elements in the form of finding puzzle items and buttons. Port extensions were used to allow for a bigger map than is typical for Hexen II, and the opposition is fairly tough. The map also makes use of a bunch of elements from the Game of Tomes / Shadows of Chaos mods, so expect alt-fires for your weapons and some additional creatures making an appearance in the bestiary.uHexen2-Shanjaq

Discourteous Bisect (MARTIMH2)The MarTim TeamA small single player level with primarily medieval texturing, by The MarTim Team (Tim van Hal, Marco van Schriek, & Roel Tiemessen). There's some competent construction, but a few flaws, the most serious being that you cannot play as the Paladin since you need to shoot a switch at a point where you'll only have the sword as this class.Download
The Docks
(Heretic E1M1)
KenonA recreation of E1M1 'The Docks' from the original Heretic, including the original textures and music. Well-done for what it is (a pretty much faithful recreation of the layout, aside from monster loadout and a few other small alterations) although I could have wished for something more of a reinterpretation taking advantage of Hexen II's advances, rather than a closely copied map.Download
Ahumado's SkullJan M. PearA two-map adventure by Jan M. Pear encompassing medieval and egyptian themes. You are on a quest to retrieve the skull of Ahumado. Twin HarbourJosh 'Wankeroo' Gallagher & DehumaniserA deathmatch level with a decent monster battle in single player. The text seems to indicate that there's an exit in there somewhere, but I haven't found it. The level has a Heretic-style dock town type of theme, with Heretic textures. Apparently an adaptation of a Heretic II custom map.Download
WorldmixHaTe }MoD{ and Pa3PyXA deathmatch level with no exit, but there are some monsters to exterminate if you're so inclined. It features a mixture of areas showcasing the four themes of the original Hexen II campaign. I imagine navigation might be a bit too tight and fiddly for good deathmatch. The map source is included if you want to edit it.Download
Nightmare CastleDehumaniser & Aenn Seidhe PriestAn adaptation of the hidden E4M1 (actually E6M3 in the latest version) found in Heretic, whose ultimate origin is from the idmap01 deathmatch level for Doom 2 by American McGee. Dcdm2(author unknown)Deathmatch in two rooms connected by teleports, one with multiple tiers and lava at the bottom, the other with a couple of bunker-like structures. The Ring of Flight is put to use.Download
Dcdm3a(author unknown)A deathmatch level with some corridors and a big room with some gimmicks like breakable walls and playing with the catapult. Not at all visually pleasing but possibly entertaining.Download
Egypt ArenaDesperadoAn Egyptian-themed deathmatch map with good looks and construction. This one is probably fun.Download
Fun DeathDarkRavagerA small and very surreal deathmatch arena consisting of levitating structures reachable by swimming.Download
GauntletUtopiaA deathmatch level consisting of a bridge over lava in the middle with an armory of basic weapons and mana on one end and the high-end weapons on the other end with a teleport to a sniper tower. Looks to be designed for players to fight over control of the tower.Download
Havdm1HavocA small, abstract deathmatch level in white brick with a bit of silent teleport trickery.Download
HelixWydraz (Anthony Affrunti)A small, vertical deathmatch map with ramps around the sides and a column of swimmable water in the center. Author describes it as 'Close quaters deathmatch for four.'Download
The Circle of OsirisKor SkarnDeathmatch in a nice-looking Egyptian temple with some silent teleport trickery to make it seem as if the level loops endlessly. It's a neat effect but I'm not sure how well it would pan out when players are running through the halls in question.Download
HwtempleKor SkarnA big, labyrinthine, Mazaera-themed map with some texture recolors. Some of the texture alignment is on the sloppy side, but there are still a few cool-looking areas with larger setpieces. There are a few semi-hidden areas like the goodies in the lava zone under the bridge. Motion is a bit restricted and fiddly in some places, though.Download
HwtombKor SkarnSimilarly to Hwosiris, this is an Egyptian-style deathmatch map with some silent teleport trickery, but unlike the simple infinite looping trick in Hwosiris, Hwtomb is quite disorienting.Download
Inchwdm3IncubusA deathmatch map with some interesting designs despite mediocre visual appeal. This one might be a fun map with real players, but Apocalypse bots don't play too well; they have trouble finding the weapons and prefer to start a melee mosh pit in the courtyard. Cronos bots have similar problems, but fight worse—don't bother.Download
Inchwdm4IncubusA deathmatch map with two distinct areas to teleport between, a Greco-Roman temple with outdoor areas, and an underground lava cavern. There are some odd texture choices but this is still one of Incubus' more visually appealing maps. Inchwdmf4 is an alternative version of the map with a different item loadout but otherwise appears to be identical.Download
Inchwdm5IncubusDeathmatch in a cave with lava traps and a teleport to a garden-like area. Getting the good items requires taking some risks with the lava; this aspect seems rather nicely designed.Download
Int18IncubusA spacious deathmatch map where the fourth weapon can be found in a levitating tower.Download
KinghillDesperadoA fight-for-the-strong-point type deathmatch map where the fourth weapon can be found at the top of a treacherous ramp along the edge of a tall stony shaft. The other room of the map is a cave with the more basic weapons.Download
Kinghill2DesperadoThe sequel to Kinghill, another cliff-climbing deathmatch based around the same concept; get the fourth weapon at the top.Download
King of the Hill 3UtopiaUtopia's entry to the 'kinghill' style of maps. Once again the deathmatch is based around climbing a cliff to reach the fourth weapon.Download
TowerDeathUtopiaA deathmatch level with a tall tower in the middle of a box. Climbing the tower requires navigating a narrow ramp that's broken in places, which is tricky even when not being attacked by other players, but the fourth weapon and a lot of mana are waiting at the top. It's essentially similar in concept to the above 'King of the Hill' levels.Download
Ksdm1Kor SkarnA deathmatch level in some sort of arcane building. Uses what appear to be some new custom textures (or I don't recognize the source they're from, at least). Uses water as opaque 'doors' or 'curtains' that can be passed through without hindrance but not seen through. Includes a MIDI track from the first Hexen. The map is large enough that Apocalypse bot navigation does them no favors, but they don't seem to have any other issues. This is one map where the Cronos bots' superior navigation gives them the advantage.Download
Ksdm2Kor SkarnA deathmatch on a series of ring-shaped structures floating in the void. Falling off the edge just teleports you back into the action, rather than killing, and can be key to traveling to different sections of the map. Includes a MIDI track from the first Hexen. Apocalypse bots do quite well on this one, especially if they manage to assemble the fourth weapon. Cronos bots manage, but artifact use and cheat jumping don't fully offset their poorer combat and lower likelihood of finding the fourth weapon.Download
LavagardenDesperadoA cavernous deathmatch map with a bunch of gimmicks such as levitating moving cubes that you can ride, rising and falling platforms, and a rainy garden room. I'm not sure how conducive all the bells & whistles are to a good deathmatch, but it is impressive on the technical front.Download
LovelavaAncient1A big deathmatch level with several different areas, some traps, teleports, a castle exterior, and as the name implies, lots of lava. I imagine this one would be fun for some casual matches.Download
Lodoss War - Incan NightmareLodo (Abdulah Pouriliaee)Deathmatch in a temple that has a larger bottom floor and a smaller upper one reachable by quick-moving lifts. Nice visuals and seems like it'd be a good design for deathmatching on too.Download
Lodoss War - Lightning WarLodo (Abdulah Pouriliaee)Deathmatch in a spooky stormy castle. Has a few secrets and tricks. Looks to be a decent level.Download
Ominous InauguralThe MarTim TeamA medieval-themed deathmatch map. I've seen prettier levels, but looks like it could be fun to play. There's a water pool that requires the dedicated 'swim up' key to escape from.Download
The Rotting MinesHeadrotA deathmatch set in a series of mine tunnels. The visuals are quite pretty, but ultimately it's a grid of corridors so I doubt it's the most entertaining map around.Download
Pmid16IncubusAn Egyptian deathmatch map with some large structures and boxy, ugly rooms with peculiar texturing choices. Some of the elevators connecting parts of the map are annoying, too. Not a good map for bots, it's too big and weirdly arranged for them to navigate well and neither the Apocalypse nor Cronos bots play enjoyably.Download
Prom(author unknown)A rather large deathmatch map with several areas including a park with a well, a hedge maze, bunkers for ballista dueling, and a dungeon.Download
Rbdm(author unknown)Trivial-designed deathmatch in a series of three rectangular, ugly rooms with statues, connected by teleports. Barely worth taking note of, but the spherical teleporters are kind of neat.Download
RrxincsIncubusA multi-tiered deathmatch map with some drop-through lava and a trippy lake region. Apocalypse bots do okay in the main arena, but have trouble if they get into the big water area. Cronos bots drown in the water and generally don't do well.Download
Serpent's Wrath GuildhallSteve Hoier (Ancient1)A castle-like deathmatch map with a big council chamber, as well as some other rooms and passages including some odd water and lava zones. According to the readme, it is meant to represent the guildhall of a Hexen II guild called Serpent's Wrath. The visuals are rather nice in some places.Download
Sibh2dm1(author unknown)A nice spacious deathmatch map with a secret to find. Not the prettiest but seems like it might play well since movement is easy and unobstructed. Not a good map for bots, however. Apocalypse bots can't play this level properly, they fall into the shallow water features and won't jump out. Cronos bots are a bit better at avoiding the pools, but still get stuck if they fall in, and aren't very exciting anyway.Download
Streets(author unknown)An urban-themed deathmatch level based around some streets and alleyways with store windows you can break into for goodies.Download
UnholyKainA deathmatch level featuring a graveyard, dungeon and sewer with some tricks and secrets. Blocky but looks like it could be entertaining. Both bots have some problems, particularly with the water area, but Cronos bots are a bit more amusing since they'll use the Ovinomancer spell.Download
Wpdm1DemolisherDeathmatch in a castle, including a dining hall and some various scenery that you can blow up. Kind of blocky but seems like it might be fun. The Apocalypse bots perform quite respectably here. The less aggressive Cronos bots are a bit of a bore, though.Download
Wtf5IncubusAn abstract, blocky deathmatch level in mostly brown brick, with a water area. Not pretty but possibly entertaining. Apocalypse bots have some trouble navigating and finding the weapons. Cronos bots are slightly better at finding things but still have trouble and also drown a lot.Download
DM pak for Hexen IInihilA pack of five deathmatch-only maps in a .pak to go in their own -game directory. Despite the author's statement of 'Don't expect some cool lookin' levels in this pak!' I've certainly seen worse-looking levels and these also seem like they could be genuinely fun to play judging by a wander around in them. Most are standard deathmatch battlegrounds but N4 is a more experimental map based around the flight powerup. Apocalypse bots do fairly well on N2, N3 and N5. N1 has too much water. Cronos bots' handling of N1 might be slightly better, others are disadvantaged. Neither bot can handle N4 due to the flight gimmick, more's the pity.

Hexenworld 2008 map-packJWHA pack of eight deathmatch-only maps. 'Cthulhu's Burnt Offerings' is an original map, which is a boxy affair based around traps, while the other maps are conversions or adaptations. There is a remake of E1M1 from Doom which has some interesting reinterpretations, while the remakes of Quake's deathmatch maps are more or less direct conversions that are aesthetically pleasing but not very imaginative outside of the reinterpretation of the military base level. DM4 does look quite nice in Mazaera theming, in my opinion. Some of the maps use textures ripped from Quake and the earlier Heretic/Hexen games.

Apocalypse BotsM. Hutchings [Doomwolf]These bots have fluid animation and dodge around nicely making them hard to hit in melee, but they are lackluster at navigating the map. Best for maps with a simple structure and easy-to-find weapons, like RAVDM4, but for such maps, if they don't emphasize artifact use, this bot often plays more effectively than the Cronos Bot. They don't use inventory items which makes them incomplete in my eyes, since this is a major aspect of what makes Hexen II's gameplay what it is. This also means they can't fly. Summoned imps don't seem to be very interested in attacking the bots, although force cubes do. Players using the Invisibility Sphere are ignored by bots while they are invisible. Portal of Praevus (and thus Demoness players) are not supported.
Of the official maps, RAVDM4 works best, RAVDM3 and RAVDM5 are ok too, RAVDM2 is so-so, and RAVDM1 is not recommended.
Download
Cronos BotsCronosThis bot's movement and animation is kind of janky, not nearly as smooth as the Apocalypse bots, and they're less adept at fighting than Apocalypse bots set on a good skill level. It's almost like they move in slow motion or have some misguided simulation of a laggy connection. Unlike the Apocalypse bots however, they can use items, though not always very smartly. They won't use flight rings though. They always play as the same class as the player, unless you set player class randomization on in the deathmatch settings—the author apparently considered this a feature. Bots can also post chat messages. Crusader bots can occasionally be very annoying, as they won't switch to the hammer to smash a frozen player but might hang around and keep instantly re-freezing them. The bot also cheats a bit, it is able to jump across wider gaps than real players can. Navigation and item use are this bot's strong points, in all other regards the Apocalypse bot seems to be superior. Portal of Praevus (and thus Demoness players) are also not supported. The mod's source is available though, so perhaps it can be improved upon.
Of the official maps, RAVDM4 works best, RAVDM3 is so-so, RAVDM1, RAVDM2, and RAVDM5 are not recommended.

Extra AbilitiesBenjamin EllisonGives each of the four classes a new starting ability that can be used to burn mana (or in the case of the necromancer, health) for a special effect that gets better with experience level increases. The Crusader gets a close-range blast attack, the Paladin can trade mana for health, the Necromancer can trade health for mana, and the Assassin can teleport behind enemies. A simple but neat concept that could be worth trying out on your next playthrough, although there are more extensive gameplay overhauls out there these days that could be more (or less) appealing. This works only with the base game, not Portal of Praevus (so no Demoness enhancement, either.)Download
Weapon LeechScytaleModifies the weapons system so that you can toggle the Tome of Power effect on and off at will. The catch? Using Tome mode without a Tome will leech away some of your experience points each time you fire, so you have to weigh the tradeoff of having more powerful attacks versus developing your experience levels more slowly. A simple but cool idea.Download
Lightning SorceryMatt Wright [ punk ]This mod changes the Necromancer's Bone Shards into a lightning spell. The sound effects on the spell are quite loud—even irritatingly so. As far as I can tell, it's just a reskin and doesn't actually alter the spell's stats.Download
Super GauntletsStephen R Bradley (a.k.a. ]t-rexx[ )This mini-mod makes the Paladin's gauntlets burn blue mana at a rate of one unit per punch in order to do double-strength punches. One downside is that the mod doesn't seem to give much consideration to Tome of Power effects. The mod also nerfs spiders' HP; they can be killed in one punch even without the mana upgrade.Download
SuperNecro Version 1.0JFKA cheat/amusement mod which makes the Necromancer's weapons ridiculously powerful. They all fire much faster and they no longer use any ammunition (although the author supposedly did not make it so they can be selected when no ammo is available, not that this is likely to be an issue.)Download
RavenLord v 0.93|neLuk|Buffs the Necromancer class in various ways: improved sickle leeches mana off of enemies (with the, I presume unintended, effect that you can also leech from destroyable scenery), cosmetic changes to magic missiles, more powerful Raven Staff, and a new special ability at level 3 (become incorporeal when standing still, similar to the Assassin's 'Hide in Shadows'). It makes the class quite powerful, but unlike SuperNecro, it does attempt to at least pay lip service to game balance.Download
ArachnophobiaRyan Wetherill aka RevenAdds an impulse to summon spiders that follow the player. The spiders don't attack the player, nor enemies either, and grant no/negligible XP if killed, so this is really a novelty or coding experiment more than anything else. The author also purportedly messed with the Necromancer stats and cheat codes a bit. .HC files are included if one wants to look at how things were done or modify the code.Download

What is pak file?

Files with pak extension are traditionally used for package files. These files are used in many programs and especially in computer games. A typical .pak file can contain various resources used in the game, such as graphics or sounds. Can be extracted with specialized tools and sometimes with common archivers.

pak file description

File extension pak is used by some computer games for their resource archives.

The .pak files are archives or compressed files, which contains various game files such as graphic files, sprites, game sounds, music, objects and another data, that are required in order to play the game.

Some utilities, often developed by fans, are able to extract the contents of such files. Probably the most used tool is Dragon UnPACker that is able to access the contents of game files from plethora of games.

Some pak files can also be simply be in common archive formats, such as rar, or zip, with their extension renamed to PAK.
